Quote by ShadrinI admit I didn't read all 370 something posts. I'm just gonna throw my opinions out there and see what you people think of em. Note, this is mostly from an American point of view.

I am of the opinion that gay marriage should be legal. Note I said marriage, not civil union, or anything like that. Separate but equal worked so well in the past. You might say that marriage is a religious term, but like it or not, it has grown to be more than that, and more importantly, is the term the government uses to define this kind of relationship.

I don't believe that it is a sin. I don't believe in sin in the first place as an atheist. Even if you believe it is a sin, shouldn't you "Hate the sin, love the sinner"? Some argue that we should protect people from harming themselves, and because they believe homosexuality is a sin, we should ban gay marriage. Ignoring that not everyone believes it is a sin, I think that, as long as they aren't harming someone else, people should be allowed to do whatever they want.

One argument I hear a lot is that if we were to legalize gay marriage, where would we draw the line? Wouldn't that open the gates to legalizing pedophilia, bestiality, and necrophilia? Luckily for us, there is a real easy place to draw the line. As long as all individuals involved give consent, then it should be legal. This rules out pedophilia, bestiality, and necrophilia, as children, animals, and corpses can't give consent.

Some people also argue that it isn't 'natural' and that homosexual couples can't reproduce, therefore they shouldn't be allowed to get married. This makes no sense to me. Why does marriage mean they have an obligation to produce children? And should we be banning things just because it doesn't directly contribute to the human races survival? I suppose we should ban mountain climbing, video games, T.V., and soft drinks then.

Another argument I've heard is, what about the children? Wouldn't they be disadvantaged by having two mothers or two fathers as opposed to a traditional family? I don't think they will, men and women aren't so different that there are things a child could only learn from one sex. The only real concern is that they might get bullied by other children in school, which isn't a fault of the parents, but a fault of the bullies parents for being biased.

Finally, some people say we should ban marriage because Christianity doesn't allow it, and America is a Christian nation. This also, makes little sense. First, which version of Christianity are we talking about? Not all of them ban homosexuality. Second, since when was America a Christian nation? Sure, it has a mostly Christian population (and that's not a good justification either, tyranny of the majority and all that), but it's never had Christianity as an official religion. Some say that it should be banned on account of that it offends there 'religious sensibilities'. Well luckily for you, you have the right to be offended, and you also have the right to offend other people (as long as you aren't spreading libel and/or slander).

Anyway, that's my thoughts. Sorry if it was kinda stream-of-conciousnessy, I tried to clean it up a bit.

So, comments? Criticisms? Objections? Non sequitur replies?

My thoughts exactly, only not so well thought-out as you have. Methinks you have given the greatest rebuttal to date on the thread where the above was posted.

So, my gratitudes.
